Black Iris is a 55ft Cruiser Stern built by J. L Pinder & Sons. She’s been my home for 5 years, coming from Bath and travelling all around the country from Oxford to Northampton and along the Thames, I’ve ended up settling in London and she’s been continuously cruising up and down the waterways of London for the last year. She’s beautifully fitted out, lots of charm and has been a wonderful and reliable home.
The carpenter who fitted her out put a lot of thought and detail into the finishes and the layout, it’s a very practical and liveable use of space. There’s also good headroom at around 6’10 in the middle. Entering through the galley, lots of storage either side of the door and in the galley itself. The galley is equipped with a 4 ring gas hob, oven and grill which works really well for cooking, baking, etc and 12v fridge which runs off the solar all year.
The worktop dividing the galley and living room doubles up as a breakfast bar. The living room itself is open plan with the stove in the middle, no fitted furniture which means you can add your own and makes the space a bit more flexible.
There’s a wardrobe at the end of the living room, after this is a bathroom with shower, pump-out loo and more storage. Beyond that is the bedroom, fitted double bed with two large drawers underneath. There’s also a stained glass window at the head of the bed which gives a really beautiful light in the morning.
She has two 235W Solar Panels which were installed in 2015, this is enough to run most things in the summer. (unless your continuously charging a laptop all day, hoovering etc). In the winter months I run the engine for hot water and to top up the batteries for about 45 mins every day. If you’re on shore power she has a Victron battery charger so you don’t need to run the engine.
